It was a relief today to hear the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, publicly affirm that the Australian government will not allow AI companies an exemption from the copyright law that protects Australian writers, artists, musicians, journalists and other creatives.
The Prime Minister effectively affirmed that AI companies will not be permitted to override copyright laws and use Australian copyrighted material for training or any other purpose without following well-established commercial and legal procedures.
This is a sensible reaffirmation of the protections that have been in place for more than a century.
