De minimis AI use for video games

Proudly Human certification of video games requires human authorship to be established at conception and to remain unbroken until release and beyond. The use of generative AI disqualifies a game from certification, except for the permitted uses listed below. Generative AI refers to AI systems that produce new content, such as images, audio, text, code, animation or 3D models, from prompts or training data.

Acceptable de minimis generative AI use

  • Coding, where a human specifies, reviews and approves the result, and all gameplay decisions remain human‑made.

  • AI assisted research, including facts, market research and industry trends

  • Antialiasing

  • Debugging

  • Automated testing

Unacceptable generative AI use

  • Novel animation

  • Concept art, mood boards

  • Generative ingame AI

  • Placeholder elements, such as 3D models, textures and user interface

  • Level design

  • Music composition, sound effects and voice acting

  • Narrative and dialogue writing

  • Generative AI postprocessing (neural rendering)

  • Localization and translation

Post‑launch updates, including live‑service updates, downloadable content, expansion packs and patches, must continue to comply with these standards for the game to keep its certification. Certification of an original release does not automatically extend to future content.
