My Work
For the past decade, I have written a column for Guardian Australia to accompany the Guardian Essential Report, a nationally representative poll of Australians.
Inspiration
The columns look to incorporate cultural songlines into business-as-usual politics to encourage readers to reflect on themselves rather than the typical polling analysis that is focused on internal political minutiae and machinations.
My Process
Each month, I work with the Essential Report team to frame questions that explore a current issue, topic, or event. I seek to match the issue with a book, movie, or musician to bring ideas to life. I typically work through three to four drafts, developing ideas, testing themes, and then incorporating field data into my final narrative.
About Me
I describe myself as a political polymath. I am an executive director and owner of Essential, a progressive campaigns consultancy whose clients include political parties, civil society, and advocacy organizations. I am also on the board of the independent think tank Per Capita, where I produce the weekly Burning Platforms podcast exploring the politics of technology. That project has expanded into a Substack page, also Proudly Human endorsed, and an across-the-aisle Friday afternoon political podcast, What's Your Poison.
