What this certification covers
My work should be certified as human-authored because a human (me) authored it. The starting point is always a sense of frustration. Orwell put it best: 'I write it because there is some lie that I want to expose, some fact to which I want to draw attention...'. This sense of frustration usually manifests in a single sentence or paragraph entering my mind, which often forms the opening line or key point of the article. From there it's a process of fleshing out the blank page. Bursts of writing follow, interspersed by thinking, idea formation, restructuring, discarding, and stress-testing. I usually send a first draft to a friend for a sense check and let the piece stew overnight before finalising. It's never a bad idea to be patient, even if that means prolonging the relief from the sense of frustration that motivated the piece in the first place.
