About the work

My work explores emotion, memory and the human need for connection, softness and refuge. Through weaving, I create abstract landscapes that sit somewhere between memory and imagination, using colour, texture and materiality to capture fleeting feelings and experiences. The slow, repetitive process of weaving becomes both meditative and transformative, allowing each work to hold traces of time, care and emotion.

Inspiration

The Imagined Landscapes series was created during the long Covid lockdowns, when the world felt both painfully small and impossibly distant. Unable to travel physically, I found myself wandering through memory, imagination and emotion instead. These woven works became invented places. Part dreamscape, part emotional map. Through colour, texture and shifting forms, I traced the feeling of movement, freedom and escape during a time of stillness. The works capture fleeting impressions of landscapes that never truly existed, yet felt deeply real to me. Weaving became a way to travel beyond the walls of home and reconnect with possibility, wonder and hope.

Process

Hand woven tapestry created from reclaimed, recycled and small batch fibres.

Each work was hand woven on a floor loom using a combination of reclaimed, recycled and small batch fibres. I built the surfaces slowly and intuitively, allowing colour, texture and form to evolve organically throughout the weaving process. Layers of yarn, fabric and hand spun fibres were combined to create depth, softness and movement, reflecting the shifting emotional landscapes that inspired the series.

About the artist

Maryanne Moodie is a contemporary fibre artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Known for her richly textured woven works, she creates large scale tapestries using reclaimed, recycled and small batch fibres. Her practice explores colour, emotion, memory and the way textiles can transform the feeling of a space. Alongside exhibiting internationally, she teaches weaving workshops and mentors emerging artists, helping revive contemporary tapestry weaving for a new generation.
